IELTS is an internationally accepted English language proficiency test designed to assess the language ability of candidates who need to study or work, where English is used as the language of communication. IELTS stands for the “International English Language Testing System” . It is recognized by various immigration authorities, governments of various countries, universities, and institutes as an eligibility criterion. A candidate appearing for an IELTS exam must have passed senior secondary school. The minimum age requirement to appear for the IELTS exam is 16 years.

Test Pattern

The IELTS (General training) exam pattern comprises of four modules that is Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The time duration for the test of first three modules is almost three hours however, the Speaking Test is scheduled, before or after “Listening, Reading and Writing” Test. The candidates are judged on the basis of these four parameters.

Listening

The listening test comprises of several recordings which may have Australian, British, or North-American accents. IELTS General Training Listening has a total of 40 questions. Each correct answer carries one mark. So, total marks are calculated out of 40. There is no negative marking.


Reading

Reading is the second module attempted during the final test. IELTS General Training Reading has a total of 40 questions. Each correct answer carries one mark. So, total marks are calculated out of 40. There is no negative marking which means that one is not penalized for an incorrect answer.

Writing

The writing test is the third part of the final test. It is a 60-minute test of your ability to write in English. The candidate is expected to complete two tasks in 60 minutes. The task 1 is a letter writing. Task 2 (about 40 minutes) is a discursive essay of 250 words in response to a question or argument on a general topic.

Speaking

The speaking test usually takes place after the other parts of the test. It is an 11 -14 minute test of your ability to speak in English. It is one to one speaking interview which is recorded at the same time. The speaking test has three parts : General questions, about any simple topic, cue card questions.
